A total of 1,200 Chinese and foreign journalists have gathered in Xiamen, an east China city to cover the forthcoming China Investment and Trade Fair scheduled for September 8-12. A spokesman for the event's organizing committee said that the number of reporters rose by 70 percent over last year. The correspondents come from China's mainland, Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan, southeast Asian countries, European countries, the United States and elsewhere. The spokesman said that a special website on the trade fair has been launched on the Internet and the opening ceremony of the event will be broadcast live worldwide through the Internet. At present, the China Investment and Trade Fair is the only national economic and trading activity in China which focuses on luring foreign funds. Economist Yan Zheng attributed the increase in the number of correspondents to the fact that the Chinese economy has made a turn for the better. He also said China's soon-to-be-realized accession into the World Trade Organization (WTO) and the economic situation in Asian countries, which have shed off the effect of the Asian financial crisis, also shows a trend of going up.
