U.S. Sen. Richard "Dick" Lugar presented the 1999 U.S. Senate Productivity Award to representatives of Warrick Operations on Thursday, August 17. The award recognizes Warrick's success in implementing Alcoa Business System principles and the improvements that have resulted in our manufacturing processes. This is the second time Warrick has received the award. "Making to use, reducing inventories and costs while still producing a high quality product takes the dedication of everyone at this facility," said Lugar, who began his career in manufacturing prior to turning to politics. "I take this award very seriously and congratulate everyone for recognizing what it will take to be successful. You have been chosen by your peers as the best." Since 1994, Warrick Operations has made milestone improvements in safety performance, reducing Lost Work Day injuries by 74 percent. In addition, a record quality trend has reduced problems at customer locations by half. "Changing the way we do business has been a key factor in the implementation of ABS," said Operations Manager Mel Lager, who accepted the award along with Steelworkers Local 104 Business Agent Jesse Sharber. "Warrick Alcoans have been the driving force to make that change." Beyond statewide recognition, the results of these changes have included increased productivity, innovative waste reduction and aggressive cost cutting. "This award is an outstanding example of the values and skills of every man and woman at this facility," said Sharber. "They continue to take on the challenges that are placed before them and put quality metal through this facility." Sen. Lugar presented the award following a plant tour and a stop at Finishing's Prep Line 7, where employees spoke with him about reliability improvements and cost savings that have resulted from the changes work groups have implemented. "Your best investment is your people," concluded Lugar. "This is an impressive operation and I'm proud to present Alcoa Warrick Operations with this award." Runners up for the 1999 Senate Productivity Award were Alcoa Lafayette Works (Layfette, IN) and National Steel Corporation's Midwest Division (Portage, IN). The Indiana Manufacturers Association conducted the screening process for the award.
