U.S.-China Telecom Regulatory & Policy Forum Held in Beijing

The U.S.-China Telecom Regulatory & Policy Forum was held in the Swiss hotel in Beijing on Oct.25,2000. At the forum Mr.Liu Cai,director general of laws and regulations of MII overviewed the development and reform of China telecom industry in the last decade.During the 10 years,the total telecom traffic volume and the size of PSTN network have increased by about 35 folds and the average annual growth rate is 43%. China has established 8 vertical and 8 horizontal fiber optic backbone networks and most of the local fiber networks. The reform of China Telecom aims at:eliminating the monopoly,introducing the competition and offering more alternatives to the users; adapting to the situation of globalization and international competition in the telecom sector. The networking information will push forward the great development of network economy like E-government,distance learning,etc.. China'entry to the WTO symbolizes that China Telecom has merged into the global stage in terms of market,products,services and personnel.With the ongoing opening-up progress,China's telecommunications market, telecom industry are believed to be able to stand its position in the fierce market competition, and maintain a sustaining growth while experimenting the hardships and tests.
